International Journal of Veterinary Science & Technology

The prime objective of the research was to assess the overall patterns of use, treatment, and well-being issues of working animals in Siraro woreda, west Arsi zone, paying much attention to the behavioral aspects of the equine owners than the animals themselves. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using small-scale survey, in-depth interview, and observation methods from research participants systematically selected through judgmental/availability sampling technique. The collected quantitative data were analyzed using improved quantitative data analyzing instrument mainly SPSS version 20 where frequency tables, cross-tabs, and percentages were applied for data presentation. And qualitative data were transcribed, organized and analyzed according the themes identifi ed and presented in a narrative manner. Major factors affecting working animals’ welfare, such as in- ability to commonly use harnesses/yokes while loading the animals, absence of separate shelter built for the equines, failure of allocating suffi cient resting time after loading, inadequacy of fodder, failure to take diseased/injured animals to the nearby veterinary clinic for treatment, have been found in the study area. The belief that equines such as donkeys never tire whatever amount of hours we let them work has also been found to be the widely held cultural value in the study area, potentially affecting the way people handle and care for their working animals. There is a need to develop a well-articulated national policy and legal frameworks that specifi cally deal with the protection and maintenance of equine welfare. In addition, the media should play awareness creation and mobilization role.

METHODS: Survey: Survey of a small scale type has been used in the study to help the researcher obtain quantitative data pertaining to basic background information of the research participants, to identify determinants of “proper use”/abuse of the equines, and legal and organizational interventions in maintaining equine welfare in the area. Specifi cally for this purpose, questionnaire was designed and disseminated to a total of 50 scientifi cally drawn samples of equine owners. Survey method is indeed not the major method of the research; instead it was used to complement the data collected through qualitative research tools specifi cally, in-depth interview and FGDs, which were the principal methods, used in the study. According to taking a minimum of 30 respondents is needed if the aim of incorporating statistical data is just to support the qualitative research (14). Th e questionnaire has been interviewer-administered by its nature given the fact that majority of respondents were expected to be uneducated/ less educated. Maximum eff ort was made by the researcher in order to get 100% response rate.

Scientifi c Journal of Food Science & Nutrition

In this study seven essential minerals copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium were measured in buffalo’s milk collected from the urban area of District Jamshoro in order to determine their Daily Intake (DI) and Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) values for 1-12 years children. All the milk samples were prepared for mineral analysis as per reported methods and their concentrations were obtained by using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Mean concentrations of essential minerals in buffaloes milk were found in the order of K>Ca>P>Na>Mg>Zn> Cu. All the analysed minerals were in range with literature data. Based on the milk consumption data highest daily intake of minerals were determined for 1-3 years children followed by 4-8 and 9-12 years. Daily intake of minerals was found in the order of K>Ca>P>Na>Mg>Zn>Cu in children. Daily intake values of these minerals in children were below the respective ranges recommenced by Institute of Medicine (IOM). In RDA contribution it was observed that milk had good contribution for Ca followed by P, Cu, Mg, Zn, K and Na for all age group children.

Proteomic Biomarkers as Indicator of Aquatic Pollution in Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus from Two Polluted Lagoons

Studying the expression of proteins in Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus muscle, is essential to understand the biological, physiological and ecological aspects that may be of advantage in ecotoxicology as a tool for biomonitoring the effects of environmental pollution, as well as food safety. This study was aimed to accomplish a systematic characterization of the muscle proteome as well as to identify a putative set of protein biomarkers in C. nigrodigitatus to environmental pollution in Ologe and Badagry lagoons. Fifteen fi sh samples were used as representative of the population for proteomics analysis. 116 proteins was expressed with 70 up-regulated, 25 down-regulated from Ologe Lagoon and 30 up-regulated, 17 down-regulated proteins from Badagry Lagoon expressed in the muscle of C. nigrodigitatus in response to environmental stressors using iTRAQ, while 8 protein spots from 2-D gels, representing 8 proteins with 2 up-regulated and 6 down-regulated, have been identifi ed using MALDI TOF/TOF MS. Pearson correlation revealed signifi cant correlation (p < 0.05) between environmental variables and protein markers. The investigation revealed that the expressed proteins in the muscle of C. nigrodigitatus served as a prognostic tool to assess the fi sh health and pollution status, which was observed that the fi sh were physiologically perturbed by environmental stressors in Ologe and Badagry lagoons.
Ologe and Badagry Lagoons are situated within the Lagos lagoon complex in Lagos State of Southwestern region of Nigeria. Ologe Lagoon is a freshwater body which opens into the Atlantic Ocean via the Badagry creeks and the Lagos harbour. Th ese Lagoons meet several socio-economic needs such as aquaculture, fishing, sand dredging and drainage across various towns and villages borderingit. By virtue of their position, (with several industries and other anthropogenic activities around it), have been impacted by partially treated and untreated industrial effluents.
